Word processing is an important skill in the workplace of today. For a wide variety of jobs, word processing skills are essential. Job seekers, those re-entering the workforce, or people who have recently started a new job may discover they need basic word processing skills. Often even people working at management level realise that to be effective in their jobs they need to master the basics of word processing.

This course is designed for people who have had little or no experience with a word processor. You will learn easy ways to create eye-catching and professional documents, such as making text bold, underlined or coloured, all at the click of a button. We will also show you how to use time saving functions, such as the spelling and grammar check.

Prerequisites:

It is recommended that attendees are familiar with using a computer, mouse and keyboard and/or have attended the Introduction to Computers course or equivalent.

  • use the spelling and grammar check to correct any mistakes

Introduction to layout and terminology

Become familiar with word processing screen layout and terminology.

 
Creating and editing

An introduction to typing documents and using various techniques when editing, saving and retrieving documents.

 
Preview and print your document

Change margins and page orientation. An introduction to previewing and printing features.

 
Getting around your document

Learn to move around your document efficiently using your mouse or keyboard.

 
Managing text

Select, replace, move and copy text within your document.

 
Formatting features

Applying existing text designs and paragraph layout options.

 
Setting, clearing and editing tabs

Understand and alter default tabulation to suit your current document.

 

Text editing

Search and correct incorrect words throughout your document with the inbuilt grammar and spell check. Add variety to your written work with the Thesaurus.

 
Letters, envelopes and labels

Create personalized letters, envelopes and labels.

As this course is based in front of a computer screen, short morning and afternoon tea breaks will be taken, as well as a half hour break for lunch. Morning and afternoon tea is provided, but attendees will need to provide their own lunch. There are a number of places to buy lunch within walking distance of all of our offices.
