The Test

You will have 30 minutes to complete the Listening module of the IELTS test.

You will have to answer 40 questions in four sections. The first two sections are concerned with social needs; there will be a conversation between two speakers as well as a monologue. The final two sections relate more closely to education or training; you will hear a conversation with up to four people, as well as a longer monologue.
You will hear a range of different voices and accents. You will be able to listen once only. 

You will have to answer the following types of questions:

  • classification
  • labelling a diagram which has numbered parts
  • matching
  • multiple choice
  • notes/summary/diagram/flow-chart/table completion
  • sentence completion
  • short answer questions


It is important to use accurate spelling and grammar.
