The Test

You will have 60 minutes to complete the Reading module of the IELTS test.

You will answer 40 questions, based on three reading texts, with a total of 2000 to 2750 words. 

You will read texts taken from magazines, journals, books or newspapers. The texts will deal with topics of general interest that are at an appropriate reading level for candidates entering tertiary study.

One or more of the texts will contain detailed logical argument. One text may also include diagrams, graphs or illustrations.

You will have to answer some of the following types of questions: 

  • choosing from a ‘heading bank’ for identified paragraphs/sections of a text
  • classification
  • identification of information in the text – yes, no or not given/true, false or not given
  • identification of writer’s views/claims – yes/no/not given
  • matching lists/phrases
  • matching lists/phrases
  • multiple choice
  • notes/summary/ diagram/table/flow-chart completion
  • sentence completion
  • short answers
