The Test

You will have 60 minutes to complete the Writing module of the IELTS test.


You will have to complete two tasks.


In Task 1, you will write a report describing some information, presented in a graph, table, chart or diagram. You may be asked to present and possibly compare data, describe the stages of a process or a sequence of events, or to explain how something works. You should spend about 20 minutes on this task and must write at least 150 words.

In Task 2 you will write an essay responding to presented with a point of view, an argument or a problem. You may be asked to present a solution to the problem, present and justify an opinion, compare or contrast evidence, or evaluate and challenge an argument. You should spend about 40 minutes on this task and must write at least 250 words.

You will be assessed on:

  • Task Achievement (Task One) / Task Response (Task Two)
  • Coherence and Cohesion
  • Lexical Resource (Vocabulary)
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy
